I'll be the first to admit that I have limited hiking knowledge and stay within my capabilities. Having said that, this story just does not add up. How does an experienced hiker get "lost" when hiking to the Goat Canyon Trestle and is found on the tracks?

Some people are "experienced" in the sense they've hiked a lot of miles on trails. That doesn't mean they know what to do in the desert when there isn't a trail. It would be easy to lose the trail on the Mortero Palms route.
Having said that, if he did start from Mortero Palms and didn't know how to get back, he could have followed the tracks around to Dos Cabezas. It would be illegal but better than being rescued. The only way someone wouldn't know to do that is if they hadn't looked at a map or done any research on the area at all before setting out.

In 3 days there must have been at least a couple dozen other people who hiked/bicycled/motorcycled to the trestle.....it does not add up.

A lot of people overstate their experience. Some “very experienced” desert hikers had to be rescued in Palm Canyon a few years ago when they somehow got lost. Some people have a stunning lack of a sense of direction. Other times mind expanding substances are involved.
Doing Instagram hikes to Potato Chip rock and Iron Mountain does not make one an experienced cross country hiker or peakbagger.
I worry about the future of the trestle. With all the visitation it just takes one idiot to burn it down or do something similarly stupid.

Also are people who want to be lost and rescued. Not saying this is the case but it's always a possibility.

As someone rather skilled at getting lost, I'm giving this older guy from out of country a little slack. It was a mid week hike and there may have not been anyone around. Sounds like he let someone know where he was going and when he would be back. Obviously he should have prepared a speck better but at least he had the sense to stay alive out there for a couple days till found.
