After 7 years driving with 20" rims I finally got rid of them. I have had this truck since new and have not really liked the 20" wheels since I got it. I have been through a couple sets of tires and wanted to get back to BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires. I have had BF Goodrich on other trucks in the past and knew they were the tires I wanted again. Since they don't make them in a size for my wheels I decided I would get some 17" wheels.
I watched the prices for a few months and a couple weeks ago Discount Tire had a good price and a nice rebate, so I paid them a visit. I decided on 285/70/17 for the tires (these are almost exactly the same size as the 275/60/20 tires I have had since buying the truck new). I opted for the E load range version of these tires since I use the truck to carry a pop-up camper. These tires have a total of 10 ply and should be more than strong enough for my camper. For wheels I went with V-Tec Off-Road rims in 17"X8.5". These wheels are black but with a machined face.
I just got back from my first trip with the new tires and wheels and so far so good. I didn't do anything too rough on this first trip, but I sure felt confident I wasn't going to get a flat from going over sharp rocks.

Nice!!
I put a set on Mary's Tacoma.
What a huge difference in handling especially off-road.
She complains that they killed her mileage though :-(

I find that the BFG's (on my trucks) have handled great in dry, rocky conditions but in mud or sand they suck. I have also split the sidewalls on two tires so far on my new truck, once in Death Valley and once out in ABDSP. I suppose I could blame my crappy driving skills. They aren't cheap either at $200 each.

OK,
I am currently in the market for a set of new tires for the samurai (stock suspension for now). The tires on it are OLD, worn out and very street oriented. I had a valve stem rip/rot off on saturday just putting air in,(easy to change/hard to break the bead) and the tires are not in much better shape. They are 205/75/15 but I think 215s would fit as well. I have narrowed it down to a few different tires. Any input you guys have would likely be more useful than what I read on the reviews, etc. We drive it around on the street and most of our off roading is in ABDSP. The issue of sidewall strength/resistance to splits (brought up here somewhere) is of concern to me, then traction, then mileage type stuff. I don't want to go bigger because there is not much power available for larger diameter tires.
The Generals are the least expensive, and durable from what I've read. The sidewall is supposedly only 2 ply, but thicker plys, than the 3 ply BFG. I don't know what to make of it, and have done the "comparison" on tire rack, etc. but no real info on sidewall stuff. I was wondering if anyone here has any opinions or experience with any of the tires below.

I had Hankook Dynapro AT-m's on my FJ Cruiser a while back.
I liked them a lot. They wore pretty good and performed decent in the desert.
Here is a pdf of the sizes etc.
I like my BFG Mud Terrain KM-2s on my Land Cruiser but they killed my mileage ;-) That being said they will climb anything.

I have Goodyear Wranglers on my Land Cruiser. I only drive it to the desert and off road there. I milage out to the desert hasn't changed. Once I'm there they perform well.

Thanks for the help. I just got back into town after Thanksgiving, hence my slowness in replying.
I will check out the goodyear wranglers, and like the Hankooks a lot, we just put 4 Hankook tires on my wife's Explorer about 2 weeks ago. I did not know they made off road tires. It looks like the smallest 15 inch tire is a 235 which might be too wide for a stock samurai. (guess there might be some suspension work in my future)
I also heartily agree with the mud terrains, my brother lived in Omaha for 10 years and used them on a 2 wheel drive 1976 F250. They would go just about anywhere in the mud and snow. They are expensive, so I probably won't go that route.
Whatever I get, I will try to post some pics when they show up.
