I was browsing through the digital archives here at UCSD and found this old postcard depicting Carrizo Gorge and the trestle.

InscriptionCalifornia's Newest Scenic Marvel, traversed by the San Diego and Arizona Railway which also passes through the garden of Imperial Valley, that remarkable land below sea level, as fertile as the Valley of the Nile, and through that peaceful portion of scenic Mexico - Lower California, affording a novel experience not to be had on any other trans-continental journey.

Peg Leg Smith Liar’s Contest. Venue Update

surfponto
surfponto
Administrator
Hi All,
Diana Lindsay and Jim McKenna asked me to post information on this year's Peg Leg Smith's Liar's Contest. It has been moved since the original site is now on recently acquired State Park land.
I have yet to attend this but it looks like a great time.
See Below:

Peg Leg Smith Liar’s Contest- ‘Perpetuating Prevarication’

Date:
1st Saturday of April
April 7th, 2018
7pm

Location:
American Legion #853
4515 Borrego Springs Road
Borrego Springs, Ca. 92004

The 102nd Anniversary of the Peg Leg Smith Liar’s Contest will be held for the first time at the American Legion Post #853. This new location will afford the benefits of dinner prior to the contest if desired, and restroom facilities. The event has been held at the later to be named Thomas L. ‘Peg Leg’ Smith Monument at Peg Leg Road and Henderson Canyon since 1916, however the land and monument is now within the State Park. Being such, new regulations and restrictions made continuing at that site prohibitive. The Legion offered a far better venue and we, the organizing members of CACTI (Committee to Accumulate Curious Tales of Incredibility), were pleased to accept their generous offer.

The Contest is all about fun. Thomas L. Smith (1801-1866) was a notorious mountain man, guide, fur trapper, prospector, horse thief, and liar. As for his prospecting, the only truth known about his discoveries is he was in fact in the Borrego Springs area (1840’s), roamed the valley and Santa Rosa mountains, and reportedly discovered gold. He claimed to have found gold and dug a mine, but was forced to flee by local Indians. When he returned to mine his bounty, he could never find it again.

The Contest was an informal event held on different dates, by different individuals, until a group headed by early ‘Borego’ homesteader and Hollywood set designer Harry Oliver, along with Ray Hetherington who operated the Rock Shop at Knott’s Berry Farm, ‘formally’ made it an annual event in 1949. It continued until 1960, then was revived in 1975 under the leadership of Diana Lindsay. It has been an annual event ever since. This year’s Legion location event will be the 44th consecutive resurrection of the 102 year old event.

Briefly, here are the rules.......there are none! It’s a liar’s contest! One only needs to just sign up at the event and banter about how you found his gold, know where it is, there never was any gold, you have a map, aliens found it and took it back to planet Feces in the third nebula on the left of the fifth black hole.....or whatever you think will win you a recycled trophy and the honor of being champion prevaricator for 2018!

Judging is simple and straight forward. While you ‘can’ read it off a paper or notebook, reading makes it a story, not a lie. Quality humor, logic, illogic, falsehood or the unimaginable is always welcome and graded as such. You can speak it, shout it, rhyme it, sing it, humm it, or mime it.....or any other method you prefer. Authentic garb, be it western with chaps, boots, slicker, or perhaps a space suit, tuxedo, pajamas, or muumuu is welcomed and appreciated......but no nakedness please. Props are huge with us judges. Maps, picks and shovels, a grand piano, horse, gold nuggets for the audience....or whatever....we judges love appropriate and meaningful gadgets. One need not lie only by yourself. Team lying, muscical band lying, family lying are equally appreciated and crowd pleasers.

New to the Contest this year is a custom built chuck wagon. Located behind the campfire, it will make for an authentic western landscape. The fire will provide not only lighting, but hung over the flames will be pots of baked beans for all attendees to consume at the conclusion while the judges add up the scores and announce the winners. There are no losers at this contest, only appreciated participants. If you enjoy lying but don’t like the ramifications derived from doing so...this is the venue for you. We love liars!

The event is family oriented. There is a children’s class of competition as well, so no profanity or obscenity please. That’s all there is to it. Just simple, with no rules, falsehoods that make attendees chuckle on the way home.

For more information on the Contest and Thomas L. ‘Peg Leg’ Smith, google each to obtain fodder for your fabrications.

Picasa Depreciation and Google Photos

So Google finally decided to depreciate the Picasa API which was the way I was pulling pictures into my AB BLOG site.upset
Suddenly I was getting 404 errors but at the same time I had really let the site kind of fall by the wayside as family stuff had come up etc.

Did some research on their developers’ site and they now require you to use Google photos and the Google Photos Library API which requires you to go through a few more hoops to get it to work.
https://developers.google.com/picasa-web/docs/3.0/deprecation

Anyway, home sick today so played around with it and got it to work.
I guess they put a cap on using the API to 10,000 requests per project per day which I don’t think is an issue.wink
You can see here (at bottom of post) how it looks pulling a Google Photo Gallery into Word Press.
http://www.anzaborrego.net/2019/01/25/super-moon-and-super-bloom/

Looking at some of my old pictures has really motivated me to get back out into the AB desert a bit more which is my goal this spring.

Take care all and a special thanks to the regulars who keep this forum going,

We have done this hike a few times and have good familiarity with the wind caves, many of the various fossils (including the 3 giant urchin like shells) and the slot canyon into the badlands.

We plan to stay in the Penthouse Cave if it is available.

I am interested in other interesting things to do in the area. I have heard there is a giant chock rock in the area that is worth seeing.

Does anyone know where the chock rock is or have other recommendations for us to check out?

APIs and services from most providers evolve for whatever reasons and unfortunately require ongoing maintenance. I had to move all my stuff out of photobucket when they changed the terms of service. Google photos has good integration with their free blogger service, but it is not as sophisticated as wordpress.

Usual popular areas of blooms are around Henderson Canyon Road and the alluvial fans that drain the Ysidro’s. Other areas can be just as good with less people.

Looked promising a couple days ago, but still not full speed yet.

There is a disheartening amount of Sahara Mustard around, including remote spots. Good to see it is being weeded out in some areas.

Hi All,
Been a while since I have posted anything here but I plan to change that. smile
We recently purchased an ATC Bobcat popup camper and took it on its' maiden voyage out to Jojoba Wash..
Camper is close to 1000 lbs loaded so I upgraded the suspension all around but I still may need to add one more leaf to the rear spring pack. Our Tacoma has the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder so it is definitely working hard to carry this tiny house around.

Camper is well equipped with a sink, stove, propane heater and queen size bed.

Sunrise in Jojoba Wash

Unfortunately the Piepkorn Slot memorial looked a little worse for wear.

Haven't seen this old trail marker before.

We found these interesting mud formations on our morning hike.

Night time temps were not too bad especially with our metal fire pit :-)

Found this mortero off one of the side canyons.

Looks like the camper will work out well for our needs. it is really nice to be able to make coffee and dinner inside when the weather turns.
Planning on exploring a lot of new areas with it over the next few years . smile

Jojoba wash is the most southern place where I can camp without seeing the Ocotillo Wind farm.
In the past we loved to camp up in Mortero Canyon etc. but now with all the towers it is obviously not the same. :-(

In case you have not seen this proposal.
Not sure I like this precedent. upset

Fee Collection and Public Serving Amenity Upgrades SURVEY

California State Parks is proposing instituting fee collection for primitive camping at various locations within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

In established primitive camping areas, the project would include providing a constructed ADA accessible Concrete Vaulted Toilet (CXT) restroom facility with parking area, new fire rings, new signage, and incorporating a $20 per night per vehicle or trailer fee.

Locations will offer camping with adjacent state managed recreational activities to include camping, hiking, equestrian, biking, bouldering, picnicking, and street legal off roading.

California State Parks is accepting comments regarding the proposed Land Use Action through April 7, 2021.

I had been in touch with him over the years regarding Anza Borrego etc.
I remember when he told me about bringing out the new Dezert magazines and asked me to do a small post.

We ended up pulling a Prius out of the sand off of the S2 just south of the Border Patrol check point a couple of weeks ago..
Guy said he pulled off the highway to look at his map and immediately buried his Prius up to the axles.

Hey Guys,
Interesting UT article
I remember the first time I hiked to the Carrizo Gorge pictos. Always liked that spot.
Need to take a day trip out there again.

I also remember when Daren and I first found the Solstice Cave. That was another fun trip.
Writing this I realize I need to get out to ABDSP more. 🤔

Have heard some scattered reports of flowers popping up in some of the washes.
Anyone seeing much color out there?
Going to take a quick overnight trip out Thursday somewhere off the S2 to check things out.
Thanks,

Things have been blooming since November from the fall rains. Lots of verbena, primrose, poppies, and desert sunflowers. It looked like the winter bloom was actually winding down a couple weeks ago with stuff going to seed. Spring bloom may just be getting growing. Everything was green a couple weeks ago. Despite all the rain in the city, not sure how much made it to the desert floor. Don’t know how good spring will be.

Great thanks,
Just got back from the southern area and there were a lot of Sand Verbena, primrose in some of the washes.
Unfortunately i lost my phone with all my pictures near the Vallecito Creek turn off on my way out. 😫

it was a crazy trip, saw two overturned 18-wheelers off the 8 near the Tecate divide on my way out and then dropped into Ocotillo to find hundreds of semis parked along the S2 waiting out the wind.
Going to head out again tomorrow for another phone search but I think it is futile at this point.

Agreed.
Saw a total of 3 people the whole day but I am sure this weekend will be busy.
Heading out early today for phone search and to show my wife the flowers 🌸🌻
Will keep everyone posted

Windy!

Yeah, the verbena and primrose were still strong. The sunflowers and daisy's and other items had mainly already gone to seed a couple weeks ago in some of the washes I was in. Flowers are nice, flowergeddon is not.

Apparently the City of Lake Elsinore is taking steps to stop Poppygeddon.
They closed Walker Canyon trail. I was able to check out some of the poppies on an adjacent hill but word has it you can't park anywhere near there or they will ticket.

Buford wrote:
Definitely starting to see lots of people out there this weekend. I am probably going to avoid the usual flower spots at the north end of the park for a while.
Sand verbena and primrose were widespread. Sunflowers in some areas. Strange it isn't all that green in some of the flower fields. Other areas are very green. Hopefully no flowergeddon like a couple years ago.

I bet. I try to avoid weekends if at all possible 😉
That area did have a lot of flowers when I was out there a couple weeks back.
We were out Monday night near Jojoba Wash and the wind was crazy.
Ended up cutting our trip short.
Driving home, I have never experience that much wind up near the summit at Campo.

You really have an eye for native artifacts. I'm sure I walk by treasures all the time in complete ignorance.

Was a casual weekend peakbagger till stumbling on this forum a decade ago and realizing everyone here had a real curiosity of the fauna/flora/geology/artifacts around them. Seems obvious, but have to say it really changed my perspective. Thanks everyone!

Borrego Springs - Regional Decarbonization Framework

Reminiscent of the Sunrise Powerlink battle as some of you might remember, Borrego Springs has been designated a low-cost option for industrial-size solar farms. Of course with this comes miles and miles of transmission lines to pipe the power to the populated areas.
A petition is circulating to delay the San Diego County Board of Supervisors' vote on the Regional Decarbonization Plan until independent consultants update the Technical Report.
