I've been looking at Storm Canyon and noticed a "residence"? out there? The storm canyon jeep trail goes by there and I was wondering if that is closed of to vehicular traffic? It looks like it's a wilderness study area? So I'm wondering what that "residence" is?
In the post:

Impatient Hiker says he went down to the floor and was along storm creek and I wanted to go check that out.
Anyone? Bueller?

So camping is allowed in Inner Pasture? There's a section of it where it's state area the entry way from agua caliente, is that ok to camp as well? I'm introducing my daughter to backpacking and wanted to do something fairly easy and fun so I was thinking an overnight in inner pasture would be a great starting point.

I will have to read some of Darens tutes on Dstretch

I have this curiousity about chapels, churchs, missions and cemeteries on Indian Reservations.
I've seen a couple, Jamuls, and Mesa Grandes.
Was curious if anyone else had this curiousity? smile
I was also curios if anyone has been to or seen San Ignacio on Los Coyotes Reservation or the chapel/church and Cemetery on Campo Reservation? Or Viejas?

Or any others you may have seen? Any one ever ask for permission to go view these things? given access or denied?

I've always wondered the link between the Christian religion and the Indians and how it plays now in modern times?

Nice hiking trip. By the way, has anyone ever been to the Cougar Canyon Solstice Cave? Supposedly a solitary badly weathered pictograph will be illuminated in a few hours in a cave somewhere in Cougar Canyon and again in exactly six months. It's reportedly a "dual purpose" cave with a natural opening for the winter solstice and and artificial walled-in opening (severely damaged in a rock fall) for the summer event.

another friend who likes to use photoshop instead of dstretch did this to the pictos we were looking at, nice photoshoping to bring out the figures and then MORE. and kept colors close to natural. The one in red almost looks like a skeleton of a fish with an eye. Maybe it's the story of Lake Cahuilla as it was drying up from the sun and those are the dead fish laying around dying. ??? smile

And there there's the second picture which brings out even more than I didn't see when I dstretched it. Makes me wonder how many layer or cover ups were done on this face.

I've been thinking about camping in the desert and what about shelters or snake sin the sleeping bag?
If you use a bivy or just a tarp type shelter what's to stop the snakes from cuddling up with you at night and you waking up to a kiss from one?
My thoughts were having an enclosed tent/shelter so they can't get in, but what if you don't want to be in a tent? Close your bivy? but that gets hot too.
Your thoughts/suggestions?

The tracks and a few feet on either side are the 'no go' areas, correct?

A few feet meaning 200 ...
Most of the right of way through is either 200 feet wide or in most areas the railroad bought and owned whole "Sections" of land. A brochure put out years ago by the State Parks System said"to cross the right of way at 90 degrees to the track", but in the gorge that's a little hard to do with many near vertical slopes on either side of the track!

"It is the opinion of the Anza-Borrego Rangers that hikers are permitted to cross the tracks at right angles within the state park."

Pinto canyon has been on my list of hikes to do and see some neat things. I finally made it out there while doing some monitoring of sites. While the people I was working for said they couldn't have me go there, they also said they couldn't stop me from "recreating" in that area. So I did, they got the report, and I marked another off my list.
For those of you who know the old PCAS article write-up on this area, we found ALL of the petroglyphs with the exception of 1 small one in one of the groups. But do you know which one?

We also found some "new" ones(?). Maybe modern? Who knows. We also found several seem to have been tampered with and the addition of Erections.

Also found the blue(not so blue now) cross and had it translated.
Did the hike with 2 friends, one of which had been to a couple of the petroglyphs and then we completed the list of petroglyphs listed in the article, and then some. A few mortero rocks and some pottery. The usual stuff all over the desert.

Great day of hiking. Started at 6:30am and got back to the trucks at 4:30 PM. 10 Hours, 13 miles(exactly). Started when the sun was coming up and ended when the sun was going down. There are a few things I need to go back and look at. Looking forward to another adventure in that area soon.
Pictures are not necessarily in order.

6:30 am start

The blue cross

"In memory of Martin Zamudio Torres born 11/29/1969 and left us 07/20/2008
Don’t fill your hearts with pain or sadness, but remember me every morning.
Remember the joy and laughter.
I’ve only gone to rest a little bit.
Although my departure left sorrow and suffering,
for me it has reduced my pain and has given me relief."

Head waters of Pinto, a large dry waterfall we had to get around, the photos just don't do the size of it justice.

The bottom of the falls

We did run into a few Palm Oasis'.

male and female...authentic? Including erection.

This next petroglyph, was written off. We couldn't find it at first and decided to leave. As we walked up the wash to go back to the trucks I stopped to get a drink and glanced between these two large boulders. And there they were. Squeezed in between two large boulders where you would not normally look and very worn form the wind , water and sand.

I asked a few people who are familiar with the "ship of the Desert" stories and each said this symbol may have something to do with Spanish Treasure or a "Mission"(?). or Spanish mission?

This was almost written off as we didn't recognize it form the article at first. Several hours later when going back I looked at the article again and realized the drawing in the article was rotated 90° counter clockwise.

Lots of areas for grinding as well

That's why I was told I wasn't supposed to go for a stewardship monitoring thing. I would have to go out with Armed BP they said and That probably wasn't going to happen. Same thing the previous archaeologist told me when I was planning this a couple years ago. There was evident of Immigrant crossing but not a lot where we were.
