Not a very exciting trip report but i camped Tuesday (5/26) at a site i like along the Coyote Canyon road a bit south of the Desert Garden area. Breezy night with high thin clouds but still a nice evening. Wednesday morning i drove up canyon to the top of the bypass route. This was actually the first time i've driven the bypass as i never felt comfortable doing it in my Tacoma. The rear end of the Tacoma always slipped around too much. But i now drive a Jeep Wrangler and did just fine. Temps were comfortable with high around 92°.

Were there any other people out and about? Sounds like the bypass is not too bad right now. I need to post something up from last weekend, hopefully in the next couple of days.

Only saw a couple people. They had parked near the 2nd stream crossing and were walking up the road. Good flow of water at both 2nd and 3rd crossings. This is the last weekend the gate will be open as the canyon is closed to vehicles June through Sept.

We were all the way up to Sheep Canyon Thursday doing our clean up. The bypass road is not as rough as it was years ago. But rougher than the last time we were up earlier this year. Need a little bit of thinking to get up it but not bad. A 2wd SUV isn't going to make it!

Yeah, we wanted to get one last cleanup in before it closes tomorrow! Next trip will be our 2nd area for cleaning....Arroyo Tapiado.

Only did the Borrego valley up Coyote Canyon to Anza full route one time back in the 1990's in 4x4. The last climb out of the canyon up to Anza was a super tough boulder filled washed out steep climb as I remember. I have some old slides some where??No 2WD SUV's. No joke! Thanks for the update. I intend to hike a portion of the route someday....

Hi rockhopper. Sometime around 1985 i did similar driving an Isuzu Trooper. This was pre-bypass road. Camped in the willows and then drove out via Turkey Track to Anza. I remember the climb out made me uncomfortable.

I went all the way through a couple of times in the late 80s and early 90s. On the first trip one of our group made it in a lifted 2 wheel drive truck, I think it was a Ford Ranger. This was pre bypass and he just blasted through the toughest sections and then walked back down the trail and drove his girlfriend's Samurai through for her. Going up through the willows was awesome but you didn't have much room to navigate. It was straight up the creek bed or don't go. Good times!
