Tom and I did a quick overnight trip to the upper reaches of Alder Canyon last weekend. Very pretty out there, weather was nice and we found a few unexpected things.

Hey ziphius, what do you know about ladybug infestations? We found bazillions of ladybugs all over the trees

Found a very unpopular benchmark, the Gene BM

Some wildlife (Tom, that is a rattlesnake BTW)

And some pretty scenery

A seismic panel pointing off towards Toro Peak

Total Mylar balloons this trip - 2

Wow, never seen that before! Apparently (and I had to Google this), they swarm to stay warm ahead of an approaching spell of cool / cold weather. Was there a big temperature change during your trip? Cold air drainage in the canyon maybe? Nice photos. - Jim

63 was the low at night and 89 was the high, we saw them mostly on the southern slopes of the santa rosa range. Thanks for looking it up..!

Been wanting to descend into that region from Comb's Peak area sometime. Very interesting terrain east of Chihuahua Valley and east of the Pacific Crest Trail. Lots of big kitty tracks too.

Okay, I admit it. Thought the rattler was a gopher snake from afar before I saw the head and heard the tail upset Those ladybugs were pretty amazing. Here's a couple more pics of Daren enjoying ABDSP:

Good to see you getting out there. I drove out to Desert Hot Springs in July during a cool spell ( 105 Deg. ) Not much hiking.
I too have seen a bazillion lady bugs on the E. side of Torro peak.
