I was in the McCain Valley area yesterday and got to see the towers that have been installed. The road is in excellent condition. It looks like the contractor has graded it nice and smooth. You could easily drive the road in a small car. (at least to the desert over look)

I haven't been up McCain Valley in a few years, and just this last weekend we went to Cottonwood campground at the top. It was sad to see the huge towers now dominating the landscape. Ugly and unnecessary.

The campground was surprisingly empty; just us and one other group. Only $6 ($3 for me 'cause I'm old) with running water and all. Beautiful and peaceful.

We took some hikes around the area and almost worse (in my opinion) than the power towers is the illegal off-roading over the obvious hiking and riding trails. All it takes is a few dirt bikes to tear up the trails, and that's what they did.

Regardless, it's a great way to spend a weekend. Much quieter than the popular campgrounds up Sunrise highway.

I am under the impression most of the off road stuff now is from border patrol but could be wrong. I have never seen off roaders that far past their designated areas.

This was obvious motorcycles. Does the border patrol use dirt bikes? I've seen them on ATVs, but not dirt bikes. It could be that last Memorial Day weekend brought out all the yahoos.

You are probably right, I ahve only seen them on ATV's also...I camped there a couple years ago on Memorial Day weekend and it was fine, just lots of rattlesnakes everywhere.

Glad to hear the water is back on at Cottonwood. There was none a few weeks ago when I was last out there.

Have seen dirt bike tracks on trails out there in the past but the big change for me was the well marked and groomed ATV trail out toward Sombrero I mention earlier http://www.anzaborrego.net/anzaborrego/Forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=777 Looked like spurs headed out to several ridges so was assuming it was BP but who knows. What does BP stand for? Seems as if the off-roaders were using many trails, official or not didn't seem to matter. I like to ride off-road but I would never ride in an area not meant for off-road use.
