Not an Anza-Borrego Desert trip, but I figured folks here would enjoy it nonetheless.

"A little more than twenty miles southeast of San Diego, within the boundaries of the Mexican land grant Rancho Jamul, a curious and substantial masonry structure stands isolated at the foot of a low hill. The structure houses two octagonal kilns, a brick smokestack rising more than thirty feet above them. Limestone and clay from a deposit on the hill behind were once burned in these kilns by the Jamul Portland Cement Manufacturing Company, an enterprise created during the boom of the 1880s." -San Diego Historical Society

Fascinating! I think "backcountry" hikes like these relate enough to ABDSP to count for this forum, IMO. Thanks for the write up, as always.

Never knew about this. Looks like an interesting place to visit. Is that 30 feet tall overall or is just the smokestack part 30feet?

Maybe around 60 feet? The whole structure looks to about 120 feet high.

THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC ACCESS AREA! You are trespassing by accessing this area. There is a reason it is not vandalized and that is because the public is not legally allowed in this area. Please be responsible and check before you go posting this as a hike and going where you are not allowed. Who ever told you you could go into this area (if you were told) is wrong and giving out bad info.

Interesting
Had never heard about this before
Have found 4 or 5 sites referencing it
Are their no trespassing signs posted?

" Boundry Ecological Reserve"........ I see Borrego Wrangler and his date are "walking over" fresh tire tracks in the mud. Sooooooo only State of California government workers only? I see no problem leaving only foot prints if there aren't any No Trespassing signs posted.

Whoa there! How about you back up those kind of statements with facts before posting something like that. We spoke with a BLM Ranger about accessing that area just before heading out. I'll take his word over that of some random person on the internet.

This is a completely legit hike on public land in an ecological reserve. This link should clarify things. Check out the additional link on "The General's Lady" which mentions the kilns and additional fascinating history on the messy transfer of lands from The Kumeyaay to Mexicans to Americans. Tom

That is actually a great site, I have used it before for other areas in San Diego. One place I have been meaning to get to is the Walker Cyn Ecological Reserve. Once I have a functioning back again I want to get out there Off Topic

I am the Lands Supervisor for the California Department of Fish and Wildife. The Department owns and manages Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve. This reserve is currently closed to the public (though in the future we hope to open up portions of the property). Violators can be cited by Department Wardens. We are currently in the process of updating the Department website to reflect this.

It will be hard believe much from an anonymous poster so please provide some credible proof. I think most people on this forum respect the lands right use.

You can check the CDFW Lands Staff Directory below but I don't see "Lands Supervisor" on the list. Maybe the dept. website is being updated to reflect this as well?

I have already emailed the Lands Program Manager for confirmation, we will see if there is a response.

So I wanted to check this site out Sunday and after a bit of research it was clear that it is NOT open to the public at all. The CDFW website for the Ecological Reserve in Jamul is very clear and it states Hours: The reserve is only open for special events.

I drove out and took a look around, there is no easy place to park and no welcoming visitor trail head signs, instead you will find fence line in all directions and No Trespassing signs posted everywhere alongside the Ecological Reserve signs. I can't vouch for when BW visited the site but I can say for certain now it is definitely off limits to the public.

The CDFW link I posted 2/2014 with info on Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve ( http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/er/region5/ranchojamul/ ) was updated between 3-9/2014 to reflect the new closure status. When we were having the above discussion, it still appeared to be open according to the CDFW site. You can search the link on wayback machine for details. Sounds like they got some kind of grant in 2013 to do habitat restoration. Thanks for the wayback machine tip, Daren Thumbs Up.

Finally developed my roll of film...here is the sign I saw hung all along the fence lines, fairly clear and straight forward, no guess work needed.

So I was able to take a trip out to the Jamul Cement Kilns (Its all a matter of who you know). Remembering this thread I asked who was in charge of the reserve. I had to laugh because I couldn't get a straight answer. There are several state and local agencies that all have some oversight of the reserve. Currently the reserve is not opent to the public. The ultimate goal is to open up the reserve to the public, but there are some issue they need to deal with. Besides the kiln, there are several other historical sites located in the reserve.

hummm...I didn't seem to have any problems finding out who was in charge and scheduling a visit...they just don't want people out there.
