Alex and I took an introductory animal tracking and sign class with the San Diego Tracking Team yesterday at Los Penasquitos canyon. Really nice bunch of people and a fun time. At least a couple of these folks participate in the annual sheep count. They conduct wildlife survey transects throughout the year and are always looking for extra pairs of eyes to help find and identify tracks (but you have to take this intro course, free, 4 hrs) to participate in transect surveys . They emphasize that you don't have to be an expert to contribute.... tracks are really easy to miss and your extra set of eyes is a big contribution to each survey, even if you can't identify what you're seeing. For those on Facebook, here is a link to a great bobcat encounter from one of their senior trackers. Hopefully, it's accessible to all.
