In case you have not seen this proposal.
Not sure I like this precedent. 
Fee Collection and Public Serving Amenity Upgrades SURVEY
California State Parks is proposing instituting fee collection for primitive camping at various locations within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
In established primitive camping areas, the project would include providing a constructed ADA accessible Concrete Vaulted Toilet (CXT) restroom facility with parking area, new fire rings, new signage, and incorporating a $20 per night per vehicle or trailer fee.
Locations will offer camping with adjacent state managed recreational activities to include camping, hiking, equestrian, biking, bouldering, picnicking, and street legal off roading.
California State Parks is accepting comments regarding the proposed Land Use Action through April 7, 2021.

Not surprising. In the last ~15 years they have started charging for day use parking at the visitor center, Hellhole Canyon, The Slot, Sheep Canyon Campground...
The primitive campgrounds have been overrun since the first flowergeddon a couple years ago. Then the pandemic hit with more people in the park, even places that used to be deserted. There are still places to camp with no one around but they take a little more effort than just a couple years ago.

Amenities don't belong in deserts. That's the definition of a desert. I don't mind paying fees here and there, if the money goes towards rangers and buying more land. Anza Borrego Foundation is a good example of the latter.

I agree with ziphius. Leave the rest of the desert alone. Just like we like it.

I have mixed feelings. I like the desert because it doesn't have amenities or too many people. There are too many careless visitors to the park and not enough rangers.
If fire rings and pit toilets concentrate people in sacrificial areas while keeping the rest of the park pristine and with fewer people I am for it. Charging $20 a night might have the opposite effect.

I remember years back they were trying to charge like $20 or something like DV was doing but then dropped that, can't remember the details.
