Greetings! I've lurked on this forum for some time now and have enjoyed reading everyone's trip reports from Anza Borrego. So I figured it was time to join. My name is John and I live in El Cajon with my wife, Autumn and 19 month old daughter, Audrey. We love getting out into the back country to camp and explore. I enjoy hiking out to Goat Canyon to see the old railroad trestle, as well as Maidenhair Falls in Hellhole Canyon. Other favorites include Coyote Canyon, Fish Creek/Split Mountain, Sandstone Canyon, Dos Cabezas, Carrizo Creek, Arroyo Tapiado, Arroyo Seco Del Diablo Canyon, Vallecito Wash, Painted Gorge, Carrizo Mountain, the Yuha Desert and much more.

My last trip on out to the desert was a prerun for an annual event (BorregoFest) that's hosted by another forum out in ABDSP. Here are a few photos and link to the full trip report:

Last year we had Lowell and Diana Lindsay as guest speakers on Friday evening discussing the many new sculptures that grace the Anza Borrego Desert. This year Diana and Lowell will again join us for a special presentation at 8:30 PM on Friday evening, 10/19/12. The topic will be one of Anza Borrego's most famous residents - Marshal South. The presentation will take place at the community room at the Butterfield Ranch Resort. Diana will have several of her books available for sale, including "the Anza Borrego Desert Region", books on Marshal South, and books on other areas of interest for this area.

Also on Friday around noon, we will be hiking to Ghost Mountain to explore the site of the Marshal South home and will also be exploring Indian ruins that South wrote about for Desert Magazine. Time permitting, we will also visit the site of a jet plane crash which is near where we will be exploring. Although, I still need a backpack to carry my daughter in.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Another plane crash site I've heard about is a ways past the end of Stag Cove Wash, off Highway 78 I believe. I also still need to check out the cattleman shack in Rockhouse Canyon. Lookin' forward to desert season and cooler weather!

Here are a few photos of the vehicles I've owned over the years that helped get me into the back country. The YJ is sitting in my backyard now. I'm not sure if I'll end up getting it going again someday or just sell it. It has a limited slip D35 rear end, 2.5" Pro Camp lift, GenRight Rocker Guards, 31x10.5 Baja Claws, and 4x100wt ProComp Spotlights. The TJ is still stock. I plan on getting a roof rack so I can haul all our gear comfortably on family outings.

2012 BorregoFest Event (October 19th - 21st, 2012)

AdventureGraham
AdventureGraham
I know this is kinda last minute but I figured I'd post this up anyway for anyone who might be interested. BorregoFest is an annual event hosted by OutdoorAdventureUSA. Folks from many different SoCal forums attend for a weekend of good times spent in the desert. I'll be heading out Friday evening with my family. Here's some info and a link to the site:

Well it's time to start planning our annual OAUSA BorregoFest event. The dates are set for the 19th through the 21st of October. This is a family friendly event that never fails to impress. We will be holding trail runs, ham radio testing, a potluck, wine and beer tasting, and probably a small raffle. Please let us know if you plan on attending. Fees and sign up info are below.

We will be using Butterfield Ranch RV Resort for this year's event. OAUSA depends on the donations from this event, and SummerFest, to help it stay in operation. Campsite fees, taxes, website expenses all add up, and OAUSA is comprised of a completely volunteer, unpaid staff. We have done our best to keep the fees reasonable, and ask that all that can, please join us at Butterfield Ranch to help support OAUSA. BorregoFest, with it’s group camping, promotes a feeling of camaraderie among the members, and creates an opportunity for those who many not know each other to share in the event face to face, as well as contribute to the future of Outdoor Adventure USA.

However, no fee is required if you are only coming out for one day or are making other accommodations outside of the group camp for spending the night. You are still allowed to come into the group site for the trail run meetings, potluck, and evening festivities each day. Fees are the same whether you stay for one night or two in the group site. Please post your interest in attending in the format you see below and your name will be added to the OAUSA Roster…

For fees, payment information, and other details go to the following link…

Thanks for trip report and photos! Looks like a good time out there. Its been ages since I've been up to Squaw Tit; I need to get out there a take some pictures. Did you happen to see any quail out there? Seems like I've seen fewer and fewer coveys out there over the years.

I would have done the same as you when the Border Patrol agent called you. Sometimes those guys get on my nerves out there. That's public land out there that we have right to be on. There's no reason for them to interfere in our lawful business while we're just out enjoying the outdoors. When asked what I'm doing out there I just say, minding my own business.

It was at that checkpoint where I was really harassed by BP agents one time. I was out in my old Jeep just enjoying a day in the desert, heading out to Carrizo Creek. They asked all the usual questions... Where are you going? Where are you coming from? What is your citizenship? I was in a good mood and answered all their questions but they still demanded to know what I was REALLY doing out there. What was I hiding? Where are the drugs? No one comes out here. There is nothing out here for anyone. After I ended up getting PO'd and yelling at them I was allowed to go on my way. It put a damper on the whole day. Now I don't give them the time of day at those checkpoints and video record all interactions.

Of course now I usually just take Dos Cabezas Road and bypass the checkpoint there.

The Carrizo Gorge at the southern edge of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a spectacular chasm and home to the Goat Canyon railroad trestle. Two hundred feet tall and 750 feet long, it's the tallest curved wooden trestle ever built in the world.

The construction of the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railroad began during World War I in the steep-walled Carrizo Gorge near the town of Jacumba. Many people were convinced at the time that it couldn't be done, but John D. Spreckels didn't rest until the "impossible track" was completed in November, 1919, at a cost of $18 million. The Goat Canyon trestle was built in 1932 after an earthquake collapsed one of the tunnels.

Heading east along I-8.

The area was busy with construction.

We found Native American morteros below and above the palms.

We passed Indian Hill on the way back but didn't look for the Indian village site since we were feeling tired and it was getting late. We piled in my Jeep and made our way back to where we had left Steve's 4runner at the trail head. It was a great hike and I hope I don't let another two years go by before I head out there again.

The hike is around 11 miles and took about 7 hours. Yeah that wall is in bad shape. There was more to it when I was out there in January. I sure hope other people aren't messing with it.

the reason I ask is because we were thinking of hiking from the RR camp to the tracks by way of a trail I saw last time we were out. (red line in picture)

Thanks,
Bob

Yeah, we didn't hike along the green route at all. We turned southeast (just before the tunnel with hawk in the photo) and onto the route highlighted in red. We had left my Jeep parked along the tracks right where the G in Google is on your map. The red route is actually an old Jeep trail that takes you all the way to the railroad tracks. I once drove all the way out there before I knew it was a closed route. It was blocked off and clearly marked when we were out there, though.

Parked next to the old RR workers camp.

I would like to get out again for a hike that I did back in June. On my last hike out from McCain Valley to Sombrero Peak I ended up bypassing my intended destination and wound up a bit North of the peak. So this time around I'm planning on doing it right.
I would like to get an early start this Saturday morning. The trail head is Cottonwood Campground off McCain Valley Road, 12.7 miles northwest of intersection with Old Highway 80. This hike isn't as tough as the one out to Goat Canyon, but there is a bit of boulder scrambling up to the peak summit. If anyone's interested in coming along feel free to post up!

Date: December 1st, 2012
Distance: 9.0 miles round trip

Elevation gain/loss: 1300'/1300'
Hiking Time: 6 Hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Trail Head: Cottonwood Campground
Directions:

From Interstate 8, take the 94/Boulevard exit (Ribbonwood Rd).
Proceed south to the first stop sign.
Turn left/east on Old Highway 80.
After approximately 2 miles, turn left on McCain Valley Road.
Follow McCain Valley Road 12.7 miles north to Cottonwood Campground (on the right).

On some of his hikes out there, Jerry Schad mentionsed that evidence of the flood waters from Kathleen could be seen by noting the contrast between desert varnish rock and gleaming white rock in recently scoured flood channels.

Sombrero Peak Hike Report

Come join me on a rewarding hike out to Sombrero Peak in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park!

"Cone-shaped Sombrero Peak rises head and shoulders above the east lip of the McCain Valley plateau, overlooking a hundred-square mile expanse of rock-strewn mountains and gorges, sun-baked valleys, and distant badlands. Conversely, the peak itself is a prominent and familiar landmark widely observed from the desert below.
Climbing Sombrero Peak is a feat attempted by relatively few people, but not because of its height (4229 feet above sea level), which is quite modest. Rather, the peak is remote from paved roads, and its boulder-guarded flanks discourage those who are not willing to put up with either a long march to its base (from the west) or a shorter but sweaty eastern approach up from the desert floor." -Jerry Schad

That's just weird that someone would take it. Could it be the Park Service? I know that they don't want GPS caches in the state park.

Just drive your Jeep out there, Bob and I saw 2 vehicles driving on the tracks from Dos Cabezas to the trestle. They did not cross the trestle since there was not enough solid surface on either side. They basically drove out there with with one set of wheels on the side dirt and the other set on the tracks.

When was this? My dad used to do that back in the 80's with his old Bronco. I remember one of the tunnels being caved in before reaching the trestle. I don't even want think about the ticket you'd get doing that now.

With a 2 day trip you could explore more of Inner Pasture and head out over Moonlight Canyon, maybe have someone drop us off at Cottonwood and meet us at Agua Caliente for a camp fire and camp out and cold beer.

A Border Patrol agent said the area around the spring on the way down Pepperwood looks like a clothing aisle at Walmart.

That sure sounds interesting. It would probably be a few months until I could do this, when I'm not so busy. I was thinking about doing this as a day hike but an overnighter sounds good too. We'd probably have to leave a vehicle at each end of the route though.

I think so. Our site was just east of Carrizo Mtn summit, which you can see in the first photo. From where we were camped, it only takes a few minutes to drive to the highest road just below the summit. You're right about the views up there. Amazing.

Carrizo Mountain is the highest point of the rocky Coyote Mountains, located in the transition zone between the Salton depression of Imperial County, and the mountains and desert valleys of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to the west. The range is located not far north of Interstate-8 near the small community of Ocotillo.

The SoCal Rendezvous Conspiracy is a free event, held each year since 2011 and put together by a group from the Expedition Portal forums and led by Dave Bennett, (Tacodoc). In addition to the Saturday evening potluck, there were donated raffle prizes, free decals and t-shirts. The group’s main objective is to plot to meet at a remote location at an agreed upon time to hang out with fellow adventurers. A fun aspect of this event is that the attendees don't know the location of base camp until it is revealed about a week before, as a set of GPS coordinates in the middle of the desert.

Over the first weekend in April, my family got together for a camping trip to Agua Caliente County Park in Anza-Borrego. Much time was spend soaking in the hot spring at night, cooling off in the outdoor pools in the day, and just relaxing around camp. I had misplaced the keys to my Jeep just before we left so we had to take the car. This meant that I wouldn't be able to drive on out to the Mud Caves in Arroyo Tapiado Canyon like I had planned. I was able to hike the easy trail to Squaw Pond, as described by Jerry Schad. Hopefully we can get in one more trip into the desert before the heat get turned on full time.

The creek is bone dry but very sandy. You also don't have to worry about getting any pin-striping along your vehicle through there anymore. All the thick vegetation along the sides have been cut and cleared out. At the historic site itself, it looks as if there might be some reconstruction going on or they're just marking the location of the station with bricks.

Yes, you're right. Have never been on it. Looks like the part east of Split Mt. Rd is pretty sketchy or nonexistent when looking at GE. Not sure of the boundaries of San Sebastian Marsh/San Felipe Creek ACEC (BLM website down) but they probably preclude anything but a walk through that portion. Looks like you can catch the far east part off 86, though. Tom

Kane Spring Road by tomteske, on Flickr

Thanks for posting that. From what I've been able to find, Old Kane Springs Road marks the boundary of the ACEC. So you can travel along the route that you highlighted in red. At Harpers Well there's a toppled wall along the wash that used to prevent erosion. About 12 feet of the old well casing has been exposed and toppled, now laying on the sand bar. One of these day I'll need to get out there and explore more of that area.
