Daren, are you currently accepting applications for hiking partners? :-) Sure do like all your pics and reports. I live down in the desert and escape to the Santa Rosas often in the summer. Been thinking about trying RH to TP, which is what led me to this thread.

Howdy. Around again as I've been poking around Fish Creek Mntns. Seems @tommy750 gets out there plenty. :-)

I have a wildlife photographer friend I met at SR spring years ago (Jack Daynes) who would probably like those hummingbird shots. You're inspiring me to start lugging a real camera on my adventures again.

I know this is an old post, but this is something I and others I know can/will do. Helps being semilocal to most of these places. Small scale I will just take care of it, large scale cleanups coordinating with gov officials help a lot too in multiple ways.

Carrizo Marsh

Me digging up old posts again...we did work on the machine that was shredding tamarisk in carrizo gorge, which is how I originally heard about it. Didn't seem like a good idea based on my experience and research. Salt Cedar is very tough and must be burnt and the seed beds and sprouts, etc. burned every year for 3-4 years to eradicate. Simply grinding them up makes it worse and now seems to be the case in CG. The marsh, I have not recently been to but think/hope it has been more successful due to the burning method.

Hello, all. Guess I never did an intro. Lived in el Centro with my family for about 20 years now. Mostly off-roading in the winter and camping in the mountains, mostly Santa rosas in the summer. Have a few books on the area. Ann japenga has interesting related articles.
Getting more into hiking and native/mining history lately. As mentioned elsewhere, if you get into trouble in my back yard, stuck, broke down, twisted ankle, holler. Also let me know if you find junk or vehicles in the desert that need removed.

I work at a machine and welding shop during the day to pay for my adventures.

Thanks

Taking a shot a trip report. This was a long one. Too long and therefore hurried for my taste. 7am-8pm. Started with frost on the ground and ice on the puddles.

Will likely go back in snatches or learn to backpack camp and explore more thoroughly.

Ah...well, I don’t see where I can add pics from my phone, and a report is nothing without pics, so I’ll be back with them later.

Well, right now winter favorite is probably fish creek mntns due to the remoteness and history. I want to explore the Coyotes more. Summer is Santa Rosa mountains, want to get over to San Jac more - try Marion Mt. I prefer tall shady trees and open forests to brushy areas without shade or oak tree areas with noisy leaves on the ground and lots of bugs.

I have been driving by that spot for years wondering what's down there. Your post pushed me to go see yesterday evening. I was short on time so just drove down to the "shelf" with the Jeep trail loop. Nearly stepped on a Southern Pacific rattler looking for water in the bottom. Saw some sherds, ruins, deer sign, and lots of quail. Couple old cars (than one is actually a Nash Rambler) I intend to go back and explore further. I'll post pictures later.

Little blingy, I call it the Bro runna, but that's how it was when I got it. I wanted the Icon suspension for the nice ride and the rock rails to keep it straight. I removed the anti sway bar to allow more suspension articulation for traction and ride comfort. I like it but now we are looking to get an RV trailer, so I need to trade it for a truck.

Start at VOM

VOM to Davies by david wyby, on Flickr

Puddletop Rock at the base of the scramble down. Lone Pine is also here. Somewhere after here there was a grove of palms and lots of sherds.

Looks like evidence of vehicle exhaust, but as I remember, was not accessible by vehicle.

Lots of morteros. I believe this was at the intersection of the furthest southern reaching BP Jeep road out of Meyer's valley and the canyon we hiked down.

Next was Tarantula Falls. Had to scramble to get around/down it.

The namesake...note the coincidence of the spider on the spiderco. Looked like he had drowned.

Side canyon had water coming down it. Needs exploring.

A grove getting closer to Davies.

Lo siento

Finally in Davies. At this point we were hoping to set off sensors and get picked up by BP.

...but we still had to hike across the valley, scramble up (and down the in the dark) the dark ridge that bisects the valley N to S, then across the remainder of the valley to the gate to an awaiting campfire with chili, etc.

My trip was very abbreviated. I stopped once I got down to the plateau and looked around the immediate area. No water but evidence of it (moisture) and deer tracks. I think I noticed an area on GE to the N that looked like it had been plowed. I'll get pictures up this evening maybe.

There were some pretty gnarly ruts on some sections of that jeep road about halfway from the S2 to the first rusted truck. I assume those are still there.

Yes, but I have been a gnarly offroader for 20 years before getting into hiking ;-)

It's been a few months now. I'd say maybe rabbit size. Too big for rat...too small for Coyote. Maybe too small for badger. Note claw dig marks to right side.

Placeholder for a trip report...last winter I hiked in a mining trail from the S. to a few mines, and once from the N, but did not reach mines.

I will upload pictures later, remind me if I forget. @britain

I want to explore more to the Western parts of the area this winter, as well as the Coyote mntns. I have an itch for the off-trail, less traveled places.

For now, it's the Santa Rosas and hopefully San Jacinto for the first time by way of Marion soon.
