I have been using Asolo boots for years, I like them and usually get them cheap on Sierra Trading Post. I prefer heavy boots though with Vibram type soles to keep cactus out, I have had cactus go right thru the sole of light weight trail hiking type shoes/boots but much of my travel in the desert is cross country and bush whacking. If I do wear some low cut shoes and shorts Dirty Girl Gaiters are wrapped around my ankles.

I wear Vasque hiking boots too. As Buford stated previously, they are durable and I like the protection. As for weight slowing you down, there are few maintained trails so your speed is already going to be slow because of sand, rocks, cactus, and yucca.

Whatever footwear is comfortable to you.

Some like trail runners for lightweight and flexibility. Some like heavy boots for protection and durability.

I use trail runners or similar light hiking low tops with Dirty Girl gaiters even off trail. I wear the tread flat in <8 months.

For me I like to protect my arch so I like a stiff sole. Currently have Vasque Bitterroot and at 500 miles on them may see only one more season. They have held up well in rocks and ab0ut everywhere. They are not a light hiking boot. Purchased ant Adventure 16 in San Diego.

Curious what footwear everyone is wearing while hiking through the desert. My trail runners and light hiking boots seem to really take a beating.
