I am new to the forum but excited to joint. I want to plan a trip to the old Salton Sea Naval Auxillary Base. I would be using my 4X4 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I know there is a rather large dune sitting in the road off 86 on the south side of the base. Any recommendations as to the best way to get to the base would be great. I saw some great photos of the base on this site a few days ago and can't seem to find them again.

you might try some intrepid exploring to get to the base, as there's a way around the sand dune that's difficult to miss. alternately you can air your tires to 15psi and drive right over the dune with no concern of getting stuck. enjoy the journey!

Wheel with caution if your near the shore, may look good but once you break through the crust you can get stuck good.

Walked the fish traps back in the 80's. With all the traffic in the area, I'm surprised they are still there. Nice photos on your other link.

Yes Tommy,
They are your photos...and great ones. I especially like the ones showing where the water level was of the ancient lake. I love to show friends the geologic wonders around here and will use these two photos especially.
