I figured I would start this thread since some people have asked about it. Current setup is a Sony a6400 and a couple lenses. Most used are the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary and the Sony 18-135.

I use Darktable or Lightroom to process the raw files. Any weird processing artifacts are due to my mistakes learning to use the programs. I am definitely making lots of mistakes and learning as I go.

I'll use this thread to post random photos for anyone interested. Most will be from Anza-Borrego, a few might be from elsewhere. Any feedback or tips are welcome.

The crazy sunrise on MLK day turned more orange after the red burned off:

The two sunrise pictures above were taken with the Sony 10-18 lens.

Some more:

I need to get some noise reduction software. Taken on a cloudy day with a high shutter speed to try and catch this one in flight, Sigma 150-600C:

Not the type of creature I was trying to capture in flight, Sigma 150-600C:

It works for more than just animals, Sigma 150-600C:

More badlands, Sony 18-135

A couple more.

I came face to face with this guy. Hiked over a ridge and smelled sheep. A couple seconds later he appeared right in front of me. By the time I got the camera out he had wandered off a ways.

You make a strong case for the Sony camera. I just know I'd crack it on my first hike, then hate myself. Haha.

@Rocko1 Almost all processed on a Mac. Some earlier pictures might be pc. It doesn’t matter since most programs work on both.

Any decent camera can probably make just as nice an image. I just happened to pick a Sony. The camera does not go on boulder hopping bushwhacking hikes. I don’t want to haul it up too much gain either.

The first hummingbird picture was almost at minimum focus distance with a sandy background in the distance. The tail looks like a processing artifact the way it separates from the background, but the raw file had that to start.

Very nice Anna's shot..!

I am becoming more a fan of using zoom lenses to capture closer images and get that "compressed" looked, kinda like these recent photos from Death Valley

Nice. I like the black and white of the first one. The compression effect makes the background still look significant.

Definitely agree about longer lenses. I like the compressed look. After using a cell phone forever, the ability to zoom and compress is novel.

I thought I would like wide angle lenses more, but they make mountains look small and far away. For my tastes wide angle lenses are less useful than I thought they would be.

Another compressed shot where the mountains are miles away. Not exactly what I wanted as a whole, but I like the compression affect.

The pictures in this post are from the last couple weeks.

I just can't help but run into these guys. When I do, I have to take pictures:

Ewes with lambs were very cautious and kept their distance. I did not approach them at all. This same ewe before she had a lamb this season would close the distance to people herself:

Should have used a tripod, but was in a hurry to get moving:

Correct on the ramp. The ramp is easy compared to the alternatives. It has a trail all the way up. In the full resolution image you can see the switchbacks at the bottom.

Sheep are from a different area. Didn't haul the long lens up with all the water supply. We didn't see any live sheep in the Santa Rosa range this trip anyway.

Interesting native, I think, plant:

Not able to make it out to Borrego recently so I went through some old pictures and tried some new things.

How many planes fly over the Santa Rosa range at night? I just left the camera on a tripod and intervalometer while I slept. The original intent was to stack the images into a single star trail image. Not enough moonlight light for the foreground so I was about to scrap the pictures. It did make an interesting unintended time lapse video. I'll probably try more intentional time lapse videos in the future:

New edit of star trails on a bright moonlit night with most plane trails edited out:

Road through a wash:

I recently noticed that I keep accidentally breaking the links to pictures in the older posts. Most will likely go unfixed.

Haven't been out to ABDSP since February with the situation recently. This will be my longest absence from the park in years.

I wonder how busy this guy has been:

Not my license, but relevant and seen this week:

I picked up a macro lens. Unfortunately I have only been able to use it locally instead of on desert flowers and insects. Hopefully no one is bored by non desert photos.

Still haven't been out to the desert.

These guys are all in my area, just as easily could be in the desert. At least two species I think.

Completely uncropped. In the full resolution version you can almost count the pollen grains on his beak. Not sharp enough though, too slow a shutter speed since I was just taking images of one in the shade:

All these were with the Sigma 150-600C and MC-11 adapter.

I wish we had a feeder or fountain but don't have space for one in the yard. All these are from walking around the neighborhood. Despite being in the middle of the city there are tons of hummingbirds everywhere.

I don't know what species are in the pictures. I think we have Anna's, Rufous, Costa's and Allen's in San Diego. I'll have to check my bird books. I am not much of a birder. I just like taking pictures of things that look cool.

Here are the frames immediately before and after the uncropped one, but cropped slightly:

Had some fun with macros too but this might have been a previous weekend.

I saw them flash the colors under their beak many times but couldn't get any great pictures of the color in sunlight.

Hopefully everyone can return to the desert soon.

El Centro NAF
Blue Angels will not post the schedules I asked. They show up in El Centro the first week of January and leave after the airshow at NAF around the second week of March. They usually practice in the morning around 9 am and then in the afternoon at 1 pm. They fly for about 2 hrs.

Yes, the rest of the year is wildlife and hiking. You got some great captures!

The comet was visible the last two nights in the city starting after sunset. It was only visible with assistance though. I couldn’t see it with the naked eye. Got more pictures.

In the desert last weekend it was clearly visible with the naked eye before sunrise.

Here it is last night about 930 pm off EC 85 a few miles above Plaster City. Was windy and 90-95 degrees still so not the best conditions! You can see the faint second tail and the entire tail has swung rightward compared to Buford's earlier pic. Could easily see it with the naked eye out there but not in my front yard in El Centro even with binoculars. Was really cool to see.

Thanks all. This was so long ago, 2014. I was using my Sony mirrorless NEX-6 (still using it), with the downloadable time lapse app. Maybe a frame every 2 seconds or so?

Nice, I like it. Mind sharing your settings taking/making the clip? Thanks!

Lots of great photos here, thanks everyone for sharing..!

@buford...the milky way glow in the background...I hate that...I always thought it was El Centro but I think tommy750 suggested it was Calexico instead.

A timelapse video from a summer night a while ago. I need to do a better job removing the insect blip early in the sequence:

From earlier this summer when you could actually see the stars through the smoke. Not as happy with this one. Click the image for the timelapse video:

Went out for a short drive last week. Hot and smokey. Seen some heavy tractor marks and grading out by Indian hill. They added some concrete barriers to keep out the illegal off-roading.

I think I got lost in the wrong desert again:

There were mountains along the way:

Strange color in the rocks:

Reach for the sky:

Sunrises:

Sunsets:

Strange pockets of rock:

Earth's shadow:

Slice of sunset:

Click the image below for a timelapse. I recently realized that some monitors, tablets and phones aren't displaying the correct colors for my timelapse videos.

Back in a more familiar location (cell phone shot):

You never know what you might find on your way to the desert (this one was local). Only had a chance to get one burst of photos before a red tail attacked and both flew off:

Great pics, Buford. I'm overdue for a new camera. My Canon point and shoot has served me well since 2009, but it took a spill a couple weeks ago when it was in my pocket and I slipped on a trail in Death Valley. Hasn't been the same since.

Your stuff is pro quality. Love it!

You should start a new post next year so we don't have to scroll so much to get to the new stuff.

A red tail hawk attacked this eagle? Seems like it would be over matched.

Thanks all.

@Tekewin I will start a new page next year. I guess this forum does not split long threads into multiple pages.

I think the Redtail Hawk was just trying to chase it away. Mockingbirds dive bomb hawks all the time. I was looking through the viewfinder and didn't see it coming. These were the only other images almost worth showing. Didn't get them both in the frame, or focus, shot straight into the sun and it was raining. Bald Eagles have been at the east county lakes on the way to Borrego off and on for years now.

New thread next year, but until then...

First storm of the season in ABDSP. I couldn't get a great shot as the rain kept getting on the front lens element:

Click the image below for the timelapse of the double rainbow forming before I had to grab my gear and get it out of the rain:

It was windy:

I got lost in a different wrong desert. In black and white:

In color:

There was some wildlife:

These are from ABDSP.

This one curled up against the tire for warmth. When your car starts to rattle and buzz even though it isn't moving:

Lugged the long lens up a ridge with sheep sign everywhere, no sheep. Just birds so had to make do:

One more from another desert:

More awesome photos. Holy crap, snake under the car tire. I need to stay alert for that. Is there a reason the other desert remains unnamed?

The most recent "other desert" is DVNP and Utah/Arizona before that.

I have seen very few rattlesnakes in all my time spent in ABDSP. I spent the evening hiking the badlands taking photos and came back to my car after dark to make dinner. At least this one gave a polite warning rattle. I had to use my trekking poles to convince it to move so it wouldn't get run over or stepped on. Definitely makes me think twice about walking around without a headlamp in the dark.

Photos from the badlands. It's a shame the light is only this good in the morning and for just a few minutes each day:

I'm still putting together all the time lapse clips I have of the first storm of the season a couple weeks ago. I'll post it at some point.
