Talk about a trip you took out to Anza Borrego
Butler/Jackass Flats/Village/Rockhouse Canyon Loop

This past weekend I did an overnighter with my 2 daughters and my friend and his daughter. We parked at the intersection of Rockhouse Canyon Road and Butler Canyon Road.
We went up Butler from there. There are a couple of areas at the front of the canyon where you have to do some climbing. After that it flattens out nice and makes for a great afternoon walk. We followed some sheep and mountain lion tracks....they were probably working the water left from the storm the week before.
At the end of Butler we cut east and went to the site of the Cahuilla village overlooking Rockhouse canyon above Hidden Spring.
The night was windy, but dry. The next morning we let the girls look around the site and there was a lot of pottery sighted as wells as Motreros. About 10 we walked down to Hidden Spring on the old pathway, checked out the spring (not much more than a seep), and walked the final 3.5 down to the truck.
All in all we did just shy of 10 miles according to the GPS, and it was a very kid friendly hike. The girls (10 and 9) did great!

That looks like a great loop. Did you get any pics of the Native American artifacts?
Sorry the forum software cut off your map image. Have been meaning to look into that.
For now it is easiest to link to an off site image.

I did get some pics of the artifacts....I'll post them up tonight.
The village itself has done a quick job of returning to nature, but if you look close you can see rocks out of place that make up foundations, etc.

I have had that same area on my list to do for awhile now, I would love to see some pics from Butler canyon.
