Gary and I spent 4 days backpacking in Rockhouse Canyon a couple weekends ago and I was suprised by all of the bright, beautiful wildflower blooms we saw. Most were at and above the 3,000' level or so, mainly starting around the base of the Santa Rosa ridge line but some extended down into Rockhouse Canyon Valley area. We got rained on 2 days and endured heavy winds most of the trip but it was fun, backpacking in Rockhouse Canyon never gets boring. Water at the springs was lower then normal which was a surprise.

Color photos taken with Garmin Montana 680t GPS.
B/W taken with an Olympus XA 35mm & TMax 100 film developed Pyrocat-HD.

Happy Mothers Day, I found this balloon heading back to our cars, literally on Mothers Day..!!

Tom had on his arrow point eagle eyes for sure...I come back from poking around some old cowboy camp and Tom shows me 7 arrow points..damn...I like the one in the last pic the most, the colors were really cool. Here are some pics from my GPS, I did not take a camera this trip.

Old cowboy camp stuff
folding tables in a rock shelter

Crapper

water spigot

tom earning his critter credits

the pretty (and funky smelling) plants tom liked so much

the second water hole we find

total balloons that trip was probably 10 or so, no picture but look at the side pocket of my pack in the ejection seat photo and you will see the bulge from just the first day of collecting

We had 40 unique sheep in Rattlesnake Spring, about 50% less than normal, weather was much cooler and sheep did not seem interested in drinking, many just lounged around the water hole all day without drinking at all. I did not take my heavy digital camera and 600mm lens this year, instead I just took a trail camera and hung on it on a mesquite nearby, here is my meager attempt at stitching together the hundreds of photos and videos it captured over the 3 day weekend.

The residence is private property and the owner is very vocal about not trespassing. The surrounding land is a mix of BLM Wilderness/ABDSP
so that means no vehicles but foot travel is fine and enjoyable. The road is gated at Troutman mtn, there is a small day use only parking area.

Use the Land Management feature of caltopo.com to see where and what land is available for use.

you can park at the campground in a camp spot and pay the fee
you can park at the campground near the east side bathrooms for "day" hiking
you can park anywhere along the way on the main road or at the end of the road wherever it is legal to park

i have done all three with no problems, of course i don't leave my wallet on the dashboard or anything, in fact i leave the car empty and a few water bottles and pop top canned food items in the bed of my truck in easy view of anyone that may wander by.

Now here’s the great part. On the way out I found what appeared to be an ancient indian trail. When I say “ancient” I mean that the stones laying on the narrow trail had a heavy brown patina, (desert varnish), and shrubs had grown over parts of the trail. Not a single rock had been overturned for maybe 300 years. (When I make an estimate like that its based on archaeological research I read. Scientists had carbon dated the remains of a cooked fish that they uncovered in a fire ring near the shoreline of Ancient Lake Cahuilla. The test showed that the fish had been cooked in 1740, plus or minus 30 years. After that the ancient lake completely dried up, and the indians didn't catch any more fish until the Trader Joes opened in 2014.

This is the trail I remember when I was out there

I think it is doable without the Red Top section....if you are set on Red Top you may be better served starting in the north fork of Indian Valley and going over the small saddle near the quad "17" imprinted on the topo map. There is a small parking spot right off the main road and traces of an old indian trail you can follow up and over. The Crawford ranch is fenced so you will know where not to go if you decide to go down the Torote cyn route. There is so much to see and explore out there it is hard (for me) to focus on just hiking fast, we are always stopping to check out some cool plants, llizards, bighorn or cultural/historical stuff....same some time for that.

I doubt with this cold weather you will need to cache water at the lower rock houses. You will have plenty of water at the cottonwoods. We can usually carry enough water for 3 days in this weather, 6 liters would easily get me thru 2 days in these temps. Just my 2 cents.

If so inclined you can return them to the rangers at the station near the VC, they will usually try to contact the owner if the info is in the cache and offer to have them come pick it up. I know where several are but they are usually ammo cans and I just don't have the room in my pack or back strength to carry them out.

Geocache and Virtual Earth caches....

December 26, 2007.
By order of the:
Superintendent
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Colorado Desert District

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Numerous geocaches have been placed within the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park without authorization. No consideration was given to resource sensitivity in the placement of any of these geocaches, and many have been discovered in very sensitive locales. Caches have been removed from archeological sites, paleontological areas, bighorn sheep watering sites and in sensitive caves.

All physical geocaches placed within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park must be removed. If the cache owner does not take responsibility for removing his/her own cache, it will be removed for them and it will not be returned.

As of this date, December 21, 2007, placement of new physical caches will be prohibited in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Virtual Earth Caches will be considered on a case by case basis and must be approved before being

published on the Geocaching.com website.

I remember reading somewhere awhile back that BP either partners with the navy or they use some of their helicopters, maybe retired ones or such and you will see them flying over key areas of the desert all the time, Carrizo Gorge, Canebrake/Inner Pasture are well known areas for activity. As Ranger Steve (RIP) would always say, "they have non permitted sensors" all over those areas and you will most likely set them off while hiking.

If you encounter BP out the field just talk to them, they have lots of good info about the area and they have always been friendly to me, they have told me where to find rock art and Bighorn Sheep. I have never had any problems with them, even at the checkpoints. They are real people just doing their job.

The Butterfield store even has a register book for people to sign that hike that area, it's out front of the store.

Some of my favorites,
1. Geology of Anza Borrego: Edge of Creation. Remeika/ Lowell Lindsay
2. Marshall South and the Ghost Mountian Chronicles. M.South

have those also, great for history and geo-reference, thanks for mentioning those, my mind was thinking hiking only.

caltopo.com - almost indispensable to me, matt has really made this a #1 map resource.
100 peaks - great all round so cal reference for hiking, derek has covered and documented some great areas to explore.

I really don't use GE much anymore, caltopo has pretty much replaced it for me but I know it is still very popular with many folks.

You could contact the Visitor Center (760) 767-4205 and they can either take the information or help direct you to the right people.

We might be referring to a different 100 peaks website. Peakbagger has the Sierra Club San Diego 100 list with reports:

I was referring to Derek's 100 Peaks website http://100peaks.com/

It happens, I remember camping in Indian Gorge one one night, we drove in at dusk and when we drove out around 9am the next morning somebody had camped right where you drive in and left a huge bonfire pit of wood pallets, beer bottles, trash, etc.

I have not been up there in some time, maybe BorregoLinda will chime in, I think she goes up that way frequently. You could also call the VC for road condition reports.

It is somewhat expensive but it has a ton of info, I personally think value wise it is worth the money..but that is me.

Bought a signed (yeah, that's how I roll smile ) copy of Wray's book at the Desert View Tower a few years ago. Just called over there and they say they're sold out and can't get Chris to get them any more. Anyone know how the third edition differs from the prior one??
What I remember was he updated some photos, added more GPS coordinates and I think he added more places/info...but I had that conversation over a year ago with him. When you order direct he will sign the book by name to you if you ask...8-)

Personally I would recommend an overnight trip, spend the night up on Rabbit (or nearby with a view of the Salton Sea) and watch the sunrise over the Salton Sea, that is one of my favorites for sure, anywhere up on the Rosa's watching the sunrise is magical.
