Just curious as to what is your go to book(s) for hiking, history, etc. in Anza Borrego. I have the book by Diana and Lowell Lindsay and an old Afoot and Afield in San Diego by Jerry Schad. Any others worth getting?

Those are it for me...they are both really just idea starters though....off trail hiking in ABDSP is where the fun is.

caltopo.com - almost indispensable to me, matt has really made this a #1 map resource. 100 peaks - great all round so cal reference for hiking, derek has covered and documented some great areas to explore.

I really don't use GE much anymore, caltopo has pretty much replaced it for me but I know it is still very popular with many folks.

Would definitely consider these four books in addition to what everyone else has mentioned. Regarding GE and caltopo, caltopo has a lot of features that are very helpful but you can pan/tilt/zoom or revert to prior satellite imaging on GE and that come in very handy at times. Love them both.

We might be referring to a different 100 peaks website. Peakbagger has the Sierra Club San Diego 100 list with reports:
http://peakbagger.com/list.aspx?lid=5058
Even if you don't peakbag, if a peak is in the area someone has been there and likely posted some kind of report.
As for caltopo, I agree with the trouble/fun. "Those lines are far enough apart, that route has to be doable."

Ben Baumans site has good trip reports for all of the Sierra Club San Diego Peaks.
http://silverset.net/100-peaks-in-san-diego
I am working on that list and have 72/100 but a lot of tough ones left. Also, another plug for Jerry Shad book. That was the first place I read about Goat Canyon Trestle.

Bought a signed (yeah, that's how I roll ) copy of Wray's book at the Desert View Tower a few years ago. Just called over there and they say they're sold out and can't get Chris to get them any more. Anyone know how the third edition differs from the prior one??

Not sure about the editions, but he said yesterday he has another 'batch' coming out. Not sure if that's for him to sell himself or what.

Although I am brand new to this forum, I'm going to step up and recommend a new book you might not have heard of yet. While it is no guide book it is an excellent book on the rock art in the region. Don Liponi and Daren Sefcik did the photography in the book. A lot of the photography is done in a process called DStretch. DStretch brings out pictographs that may no longer be visible to the naked eye. I was a skeptic at first but found there was an app for the iPhone you could use so I tried it out on several trips I have made into the AB and surrounding area and was surprised at the results. If you might be interested in the book, you can find it at the La Rumorosa website. (A disclaimer: I designed the book for Don but that makes me no less a passionate advocate for the quality of the material within the book.)

Just purchased this book. Seems apropos during our current political climate to review the local details of our so called Manifest Destiny. Doubt it will be an easy read.

Archives of desert magazine is good for finding long forgotten info. Just do not rely on the maps too much. I have found them to be very rough (not to scale, lacking significant detail, etc).

If you have an iPhone or iPad, there's my $2 app called Anza-Borrego State Park Trails: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/anza-borrego-state-park-trails/id1202433999?mt=8 It contains offline maps so can be used without an Internet connection.

About 1/4 through my copy and difficult to comprehend the genocidal level treatment Native Americans endured at the hands of "enlightened" Westerners. Impossible to exaggerate the suffering endured.

Should get my copy today. My 5th generation grandfather donated cattle to the tail of tears Indians 1836 was a bad winter, 5th gen grandmother died (per bible script notes on cattle)when they got to Missouri. I ordered it but haven't got it yet. $14.55 on amazon. Agree, not a big fan of the mileage while driving on a road format of travel guides.
