Decided to head out today and explore a bit of the south Carrizo Badlands. Drove into Canyon Sin Nombre and passed the graffiti point with some new additions since the last time I was through. Parked about a mile upstream from Carrizo Creek and headed east on foot

Nice solitary chunk of petrified wood.

On a secluded dune in the middle of nowhere. Why Lady Campers, Why?

Made it to BM Leckie.

A little further up, a view of Carrizo Creek with the remarkable changes from tamarisk abatement.

Decided to go north side of the creek and passed through areas of previous dense growth with zero problem. Spied a very large mortero and a curious vertical groove I've never seen at a rock feature before. A few more slicks and morteros were nearby.

Few remnants of old fencing.

Encountered a couple photo reference points.

My goal was to try and find some possible sleeping circles I thought I saw on GE but they were sandy depressions and a couple "sleeping squares." Nice place to pitch a tent.

Was getting late but decided I'd dash toward the Stage Station and then head home. It's just behind the ridge in the center of the pic.

A few yards to the west is the collapsed rock house with assorted piles of junk and the famous Carrizo tractor.

Popped on the headlamp and headed home. Two mylars, 10.5 miles and another relaxing day in the desert. Enjoy. Tom

Absolutely love it Tom, I really like the B/W photos, I need to learn how you make those. I have not been out to Carrizo Marsh yet, would like to go someday. Too bad we missed eachother this weekend, you would have enjoyed going with us.

Way to go on sleuthing out the sleeping square from GE. smile That groove / mortero combo is a new one to my eyes. Always something new to find out there. Love the photos, particularly your B&Ws. Funny that you found nail polish containers out there....there is a lot of internet chatter about sniffing polish (and remover) to get high. Maybe they weren't doing their nails after all.... and if you want to get high, word on the street is that Bacardi or Grey Goose is the way to go. wink

Sniffing nail polish was not even on my radar but I think you nailed it, Jim! That probably explains why my in-house mani-pedi consultant AKA girlfriend wasn't too impressed with the brands (think her expert reply was something like, "do they still make that crap?"). smile

Assuming you're going to post on your trip? Also assuming you got time lapse shots of the meteor shower? Yeah, wish I would have found out about my change in plans earlier so I could have joined you.

Nail polish in remote desert dunes and immediately my mind turns to nefarious reasons. Sounds like the cheap stuff gets the job done. smile

I managed to forget to do night photography (or my hands were cold), but I watched 2-3 meteors per minute between 2 and 3 am. smile

I brought all the camera crap to record them, fast wide lens, tripod, cable release, etc...but the cheap bottle of booze I brought knocked me out until the early morning sun came poking it's head of the mountain ranges...blah

Great shots of that area! I've been jeepin' all around that place. I'm always tempted to follow the trail through the forbidden Carrizo Impact area.

I found the story of that tractor. From Roundranchingfeatures. It was in Part III.
At Carrizo in the 1950’s, Buster McCain cleared some land and planted alfalfa. (1956 Ranger Reports) The tractor he used to accomplish this remains in the area, on the other side of “Clay Hill”, at the old Graves camp.
To irrigate his field, Buster created a berm around the bottom of the east side of clay Hill. The plan was for rain run-off to be channeled to a small earthen dammed reservoir he had constructed at the southern end of the hill.
Consequently, this activity is what destroyed a large portion of what remained of the Carrizo Stage Station.

Looks like we took the same route, some of your pictures look like mine. Couple questions. Have you ever came across a rock-cement monument about 4 ft high with a plaque Carrizo Stage station on it? There was one in the area in 2000. If I remember correctly its not near the real station. Also theres another structure I spotted. Would this be McCains place? Have you seen it? It is located about 1000ft west and slightly south of the real station. EDIT: shack does not appear on earlier GE images.

Haven't seen the monument and not sure where it might be. The old Graves cabin's roof collapsed some time ago and a new roof was placed over it in the last year or so presumably to protect this historical site. You can see a fair amount of junk was also removed at the same time if you blink between the last couple GE images. Tom
