Well, we drove through Anza-Borrego... does that count? One of these days I gotta get out an explore more remnants of the old Lake Cahuilla.

For some time now I've been wanting to take my family on a tour of the Salton Sea, here in the desert of Southern California, to check out the various historical sites and points of interest along or near its shores. It seems to me that most people don't give the Salton Sea much thought, and when they do they think of a nasty, polluted, uninviting place. Stories of a polluted Salton Sea are greatly exaggerated. Responsible sources have verified the fact that the sea is safe. The real problem is too much salt-carried in by irrigation water, and concentrated by the natural process of evaporation. Its a beautiful place to visit, camp, and explore, especially in the cooler months.

Wrangler, that's a pretty epic trip report. Read the whole thing. I wish I had that 1st station wagon pictured at Salvation Mtn. I'd seen Into The Wild and completely forgot about the Salvation Mtn. scene. Checked out the clip from the movie and then that led me down a youtube wormhole to a video about Slab City called "Living Without Laws". Lots of smokes, beers, missing teeth, propane, freedom, and rattlesnake handling. Thanks again for the Salton Sea tour.

Great trip. Read the report also. I did the round the sea trip last month with a stay at the hot springs near Salvation Mtn.

Have to agree with Ziphius. That was an epic report! Looks like the water level was a few feet lower than the last time I was out at Bombay Beach. Never been to Salvation Mt. Need to get out there. Interestingly it's built on the old Lake Cahuilla shoreline. Thanks. Tom

As always a very detailed, informative and lengthy report...nice job. I really like a lot of the photos you have, especially that first sunirse/sunset one. That 4x4 van I see everywhere, assuming there not too many of them, in fact just saw it it the other day in town. Mud pots are a blast when they are going off, the whole ground vibrates.
