When doing extended backpacking into McCain Valley do you park your vehicles at the campgrounds like cottonwood, pay the camping fees and hike out? or is there something else?
Thanks

I stayed a couple of nights at Cottonwood campground a few months ago and it seemed totally abandoned to me. Some camp spots were so grown over with brush you couldn't even see them. The water was in no use but maybe that changes periodically. I stayed on the western part of the campground and the box you pay to was completely useless because the lock wasn't even on the back. It was actually a spooky couple of nights but man I love it there. Id like to go there more in the next few months before the big project.

you can park at the campground in a camp spot and pay the fee
you can park at the campground near the east side bathrooms for "day" hiking
you can park anywhere along the way on the main road or at the end of the road wherever it is legal to park

i have done all three with no problems, of course i don't leave my wallet on the dashboard or anything, in fact i leave the car empty and a few water bottles and pop top canned food items in the bed of my truck in easy view of anyone that may wander by.
