I finally made it to Indian Hill this weekend. I had tried to do the hike a couple weeks ago but a rainy windy day caused a short delay for this hike. It has been many years since we have hiked to the cave but it was well worth the wait. Saturday was a beautiful day, warm with a nice breeze and plenty of blue skies.
We left the crowded wash and traveled across the flats only to find the huge shelter cave full of a troop of boy scouts out for a night. So we changed course and headed for the tank. The tank was very full and my dog Wylie enjoyed a cool dip after the hike in. He is a 100 pound Golden Retriever so that should give you some idea about the depth of the water in the tank.
The view from the tank is absolutely beautiful.
After our visit to the tank we headed over to the cave and waited for most of the people to leave then climbed up and took a few pics of the beautiful pictographs inside the cave.
We then left the cave area and headed toward the Railroad camp and the old jeep trail.
We figured if we hiked back to the truck by this route it would be a little less crowded and it was. We did not see another person till we got back to the truck. Although we did hear the boy scouts having fun somewhere across the desert. We did however, see many beautiful flowers on this part of the hike.
From the Indian Hill area we drove back out to S-2 and then north to June Wash where we would spend the night. We had a great campsite and campfire and awoke to a beautiful sunrise.
Sunday was very overcast but there were plenty of flowers in this area of the park to keep my attention off the sky. I took a little stroll up a side wash off of the main June Wash and found lots of Brown Eyed Primrose,
Desert Lilies,
and lots of little yellow flowers that I think are California Suncup.
There were many other flowers in this area, Arizona Lupine, Sand Verbena, Desert Dandelions,Chicory, Desert Pincusion, a few Cholla, and more. There was also a great view of Sombrero Peak.
We finished our trip with a drive into Borrego Springs for breakfast. I have NEVER seen so many people in Borrego Springs in my 25 + years of going to ABDSP.

Awesome pictures David!
Too bad about the crowds. I guess there is something to be said for trying to do a mid-week trip
Crazy that there was a troop of Boy Scouts camped there.
I think the sunrise pic is great!

SO jealous! Great flower pics, and I still long to see that pool area (not to mention the pictographs).
Your doggie is smushable...such a docile little breed (I use the term "little" loosely, given that 100 pounds). I like how he's sort of off doing his own little investigations in the 5th pic..."La la LA!" <---pooch channeling.
I wonder how the BS natives feel about the onslaught of visitors. I'm sure they recognize the fiscal benefit, but are probably a little annoyed by the intrusiveness. I found the townspeople to be...an interesting bunch. Not to imply a creepiness, but I do think a Stephen King novel could easily be staged there...
Does the water tank ever totally dry up -- say, in the dead of summer?

OK, now I see where the tank is..I didn't think you had climbed that much and was looking much lower, down in the wash.

What's out in June Wash? I always drive by it but have never really thought much about exploring that area.

Daren,
Look like you guys had a nice trip. That railroad camp area is very cool. We backpacked in there a few years back and had a great time exploring that area.
Did you make it up to the tank? Was there water in it? It looked like water in your bee video so there must have been some recent rains.
June Wash is a nice place. There are some good campsites up there and if you go way up to where the the road ends you can climb up and look down toward the upper reaches of Arroyo Seco, Sandstone, and those washes/canyons in that part of the park. I also think there are some interesting spire type rock formations up there but I can't find any pictures of them. Just going from memory. It is a fairly wide wash all the way up to the road end. Easy for your truck. I think you (not me) could probably reach Whale Peak from there. I don't know anyone who has gone that way but if anyone could make it go I think you would be that guy. From the top of Whale Peak it looks pretty rugged heading down in that direction.

No, I did not find it..I was looking down at the base of the wash. Now that I see your picture I know where it is, next time I am out I will go check it out. The water in my bee video was from me washing myself off at the end of the day, the water collected in a mortero on the boulder I was standing on. There were two morteros actually and the bees emptied both in about 15 minutes...blew me away.

Hey David and Daren,
I know this is an old post but I went and checked out "David's Tank".
Unfortunately no water but cool spot nonetheless.
Will have to check it after a storm
