Nice find! How high up on the accent was it? What is the handle made of? I'd love to know how long that knife was out there.

Sorry to drudge up an older post. I was wondering about water caching. Can you tell me what containers you use/recommend? I have heard of people having their bottles chewed threw by mice/critters. Is best to completely bury the bottles also?

I'm thinking about looking around Mojave until AB reopens. Or going further east on I-8. I can do those trips with one stop for self serve gas and no interactions.

Also looks like you utilized the Lassator Hay shortcut form the fire road to the PCT. How was that?

Interesting. Do people go up there to shoot from Rockhouse Canyon or do they come from the north? .

[When we were settling in at camp just after dark I heard faint voices-Brian heard these too. It sounded like people coming through the brush-from multiple directions to me- but I never saw headlamps or signs of a camp the next morning. Hearing about the old illegal growing ops-this certainly put me on high alert.

I've looked at the topo of those canyons on the south side wondering if anyone has ever explored them. The links show that most, if not all, have been explored by someone.

That feeling when your waypoint is only a half mile away but you realize it's on the other side of a canyon that looks like this.

So that's how you beat me back to the car! When I looked at google earth after I got home I could see that would have been a better route than what I did. I saw some cairns leading down toward the deep canyon and followed them. It was a wild ride.

There were probably better ways to descend the ridge I was on, but I started seeing cairns, so I figured at least someone had done my route before.

Interesting seeing the other hikers out there. Actually kinda nice if your soloing.

Thursday april 1, completed 3rd crossing,box canyon,hidden spring,santa rosa, nicholias loop.
Went down nicholias.
Done this loop twice before.

Very nice. All I saw there was thick mud. Is this further up the area or did the grass get cut?

Yes, I parked my car almost in the same spot for the Rabbit summit day hike. We were able to get a little closer due to an unlocked gate at the time. Just make sure you find the old Native American trail from the ancient shore line towards Barton canyon. It will save a lot of time and effort.

Do you have a gpx of old native route? Would it be similar to this?

Great pics. I have a second edition of Schad's book that describes a hike down the length of the gorge. It's not in later editions. My first desert hike was 30 years ago and I wanted to see the trestlen.

Any running water left in the bottom with the lack of rain this year?
