Welcome aboard.
We also have a Tacoma 4x4.

We usually frequent the southern areas south of Scissors Crossings
Usually have a slide in camper on it but here is a shot from last month πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

Howdy,

Have done just a couple of hikes and camping trips. Have a Tacoma 4x4, so able to get off the beaten path. So far have camped in Tamarisk Grove and June Wash and hiked Whale, Diablo, culp valley, and pictographs.

From Culp Valley Loop, my first time into Anza Borrego.

Look forward to learning more about this great place in our backyard!

Yep. Both The ABF and the State Parks site were listing June Wash as a spot to see the wildflowers this past flower season.
There were also a bunch of FaceBook posts on the area in some of the groups.
Personally, when I post a FB picture I say "Somewhere in southern Anza Borrego" πŸ˜‰

I used to go to June Wash a lot. I used Schad's route to access Sandstone Canyon from there. It was before I had a car with AWD, so I couldn't drive to Sandstone from the usual route through Fish Creek. It's been a few years now since I've been to June Wash, but it sounds like more people know about it now. I never remember seeing people camping there when I used to go.

I totally get it.
We also try to visit the quiet areas.
The only "established" campground we have stayed at was Bow Willow but we usually do dispersed camping.

We did see this guy this past Saturday in Jojoba Wash

My wife and I camped at Palm Canyon over the weekend. It was our first time staying there. Fancy campground with showers, really nice.

Since it was only her second time in the park, we visited some of the classics. Maidenhair Falls, Slot loop, Calcite mine. Maidenhair was barely a trickle. Dark, stagnant water at the base and lots of bees. Also a lot of tarantula hawks along the trail. I was surprised by the $10 day hike fee at the trailhead. I haven't been there in a few years, maybe it's not new.

The last time I was at the Slot was about 10 years ago. Since then, a toilet building has been added, the parking area is larger with an overflow, and a park employee was set up collecting the $10 fee on the drive in. What shocked me was the crowds. When we got there at 8:30 AM, about a dozen vehicles were already there. We passed a family of 8 and other parties slowly working their way through the slot. We did a loop around the back toward Borrego Mountain, then made a failed attempt to get back to the main canyon by just heading in that general direction. Hit dead ends about 200' from the main canyon according to GPS. Easy to backtrack and get out, but it was fun to explore some of the side slots. When we got back to the parking lot, there were 40 vehicles and dozens of people wandering around. I am guessing social media (plus the holiday) has exploded the popularity of the Slot.

There were also a lot of people at the Calcite mine. At least 10 trucks passed us either driving in or out.

It wasn't the sparsely populated park I remember even from the last couple of years. Maybe it's because I tend to hang out in harder to reach places, but the crowds were a real bummer. /rant off.

Nice pictures. Good to see the Rockhouse cabin is still somewhat intact.

Congrats on the retirement! I'd be interested in hearing that story.

It's hard for me to imagine NOT getting up every day and going to work. I plan to do some online tutoring, but I want to work 2-3 days a week. I need to be doing something productive since my wife has a few years to go for her pension. I don't think I'll miss the full time grind, but I will miss some of the people.

This area is off Jojoba Wash near the Piepkorn slot so definitely within the Anza Borrego State Park boundary.
I only know because I have camped near here numerous times.
From what I have researched these are test trucks with Texas license plates.

No, I have skid plates and Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, but other than that it's a stock Crosstrek. I've been in some situations where a lift would definitely help, but in the case of Indian Gorge the main issue was the soft sand. My car does great in that.

I never saw a single car on S2 from Ocotillo to the Carrizo Gorge turnoff.

There was a lot of soft sand in Carrizo Gorge but the Landcruiser just floats over it.
After the hike, I drove over to Egg Mountain to have lunch and a quick beer before heading back to the coast.

Not an extreme hike compare to what some of you guys do but thought I would post it anyway πŸ˜‰

First night we camped down in Jojoba Wash but man oh man the military air traffic was ridiculous.
The final straw was a military Osprey thundering through the sky at 1AM shaking the truck camper.
On the positive side there was an amazing cactus bloom display.
We spent the next day hiking around taking cactus pictures but decided we would camp further north the next night.

Beavertail in bloom (Jojoba Wash)

Barrel Cactus in bloom (Jojoba Wash)

Hedgehog in bloom (Jojoba Wash)

Next day we drove over to Pinyon Wash which I have now decided is my favorite area to camp. We have camped here before but it has been at least 10 years as all of our camping is usually south of Scissors Crossing.

After a better night's sleep i.e. no air traffic, we decided we would hike up to see how much was left of the old Harper Cabin site.
Last time we hiked here was on an Anza Borrego Foundation sponsored hike led by Mark Jorgensen, so we were curious as to how it has fared in the last 10 plus years.
We got an early start and reached Harper Flat by 9AM. There was a great display of Desert Dandelions covering the valley floor so of course we had to take a bunch of pictures.

A field of Desert Dandelions (Harper Flat)

Not soon after we met up with a lone mountain biker that was doing a big overnight loop from Borrego Springs, unfortunately for him, he had run out of water so we offered to fill one of his water bottles. He mentioned that he had not slept that well the previous night since he was worried about his lack of water, so we were glad to help him out.

After saying goodbye to our new friend and hiking up a couple incorrect tributaries we did find the old cabin. It was in much better shape than either of us predicted.

Old water trough which is your clue you are close to the cabin

Maybe to call it a "cabin" is a stretch but it is cool nonetheless.πŸ˜€

The old dam is not going anywhere.
This thing is solid and is truly an engineering marvel considering the time period it was built.

I am guessing that is the flight path. El Centro NAF over Jojoba Wash then to the coast. It has gotten so noisy there.

Harper Flat is huge and I am sure you could spend a few days just exploring that area.
