Solo Backpacking in Rockhouse Valley

I have visited the upper rockhouses. They are pretty much where Schad's map shows them. The trick is locating the drainage which even when you are in it has several sub washes. The houses are scattered along the foothills to the left of a large mesa against the mountains they are at several elevations. One of the people who went with me said there was one further east also. I am leading the trip mar 17 to find the ones in Nicolas canyon and maybe look at the mining ruins also. We will also visit the other rockhouses in the valley. Maybe go to the petroglyphs if we have time.

Cougar Canyon Conditions?

We went to salvador and upper willows recently. Cal fire did road improvements when the fire burned up there to get equipment in. Including making the third crossing perpendicular to the trail and about 30 ft to the west of the old crossing. It is now very easy. Boulder alley has also been filled and the big rock that was hard to get around has been blasted or something. It is know possible to get up there with a standard 4x4 forerunner with running boards. Ir is still bumpy though. The 4 wheelers are actually quite ****ed about this because it is really not a challenge anymore.

Canebrake Canyon Access

Just the mouth of canebrake at crawford ranch is private. You can access it from moonlight canyon, an unnamed drainage from inner pasture, the north fork of Indian canyon or the pepperwood trail from mc cain valley. It is actually illegal to land a helicopter in blm wilderness in including the sawtooth mountain wilderness study area which covers canebrake inner pasture and el potrero canyon

Dan, Ha ha. I went and looked at the map you were talking about. It is pretty hilarious. I believe the photos are of the rockhouses by the entrance to the valley. The map is horribly out of proportion and scale. I believe that the petroglyphs they were talking about are the ones at Clark dry lake. which are roughly two miles east of hidden spring. We will be starting early and gain elevation quickly so if it is warm We should be high enough and far enough along to avoid the worst of it. There is also a Sierra club/WBC group going out that weekend but they are starting much later.

Diablo Dropoff graded

I was at hapapa flat in early December and we passed a small tracked excavator parked just off the road west of fish creek before dave mccain spring turnoff. I noticed that they had also moved rocks in the wash to limit vehicles to a single route through the upper canyon from before sandstone to hapapa flat. I believe it is necessary evil so that the rangers can access the areas. We didn't go in to sandstone to see if they had cleared the easter quake landslide or to pinyon dropoff . I talked to a ranger who said they were going to block off the illegal wide entries to pinyon and make one path don't know if they did it on this trip.
